Can Minors Get Medical Cards in Ohio?

If you’re under 18, you’re not out of luck when it comes to getting a medical marijuana card in Ohio. Minors can legally get MMJ cards in the Buckeye State; the process is just slightly different.

Minors cannot meet with medical marijuana doctors on their own to get a card. Instead, a parent or guardian must legally consent to the minor being seen by the doctor.

If approved for MMJ, the minor will need a designated caregiver (aka parent or guardian) to apply to the state’s registry on their behalf.

Patients who need medical marijuana but are unable to visit dispensaries to get it themselves can work with a caregiver to do so.

This includes people who are disabled and people who are under the age of 18. Medical marijuana caregivers in Ohio must be over the age of 21 and be able to prove legal residency.

The process of becoming an Ohio medical marijuana caregiver is fairly straightforward – the patient will need to get certified by a doctor, and then the caregiver will receive a link to sign up and complete the application.

Caregivers need to pay a $25 annual fee for their cards. In Ohio, you can only serve as a caregiver for up to two people at a time.

You can only purchase cannabis for the designated patient and cannot redistribute it.

How much MMJ can you possess in Ohio?

Ohio’s possession laws for people with medical marijuana cards are slightly unusual because they vary slightly depending on your condition.

These limits are set by the Ohio medical marijuana control program. Your medical marijuana doctor will determine what possession tier you are in depending on the severity of your medical condition.

For those who don’t have a medical marijuana card, possession of cannabis has been decriminalized in Ohio. This means that possession of less than 100 grams of marijuana will give you a $150 fine, but you won’t serve jail time and it won’t go on your criminal record.
